EV Conversion Process - Installing Electric Motor
Next we will fabricate aluminum adapter plate that will connect electric motor to the transmission, along with shaft coupler to link motor shaft with transmission's input shaft. If you have manual transmission, we would remove the clutch, since clutch is not needed in EV. Manual transmission can be easily shifted with electric motor without disengaging the motor from the transmission, because electric motor does not stall like ICE does. If you have automatic transmission, we would link electric motor shaft with torque converter which is part of every automatic transmission. In this case we would use our own developed control board to idle electric motor, so you can retain all original functions of automatic transmission, since this type of transmission requires hydraulic pressure for proper operations.
We would also fabricate rear mounting plate, which attaches to the opposite end of the electric motor. This plate will support the motor and also host accessories like steering pump and AC compressor, driven by a belt from the rear shaft of the motor.
Then we install this motor/transmission assembly back into the car, connect all output shafts, links, wiring harnesses, etc. At this point we can test mechanical portion of the conversion by applying 12V starter battery to the motor. The motor should spin smoothly and quietly, without any vibrations, we can also see transmission working, turning the wheels which are raised off the ground at this time.
Here is the picture of this phase of the conversion.
